Purpose
To ensure that all staff and visitors are conscious of where to seek First Aid within the College and what to do if someone requires first aid assistance.
Procedure
If there is an emergency, call the First Aid Officer immediately and inform your supervisor. Have someone calm the casualty until a first aider arrives.
Check that there is no danger and assess the casualty’s response. If the person is not breathing then Expired Air Resuscitation should be performed.
I) Clear the Airway
2) Open the Airway
3) Check for Breathing
4) If the casualty is breathing, make comfortable until an ambulance arrives
5) If the casualty is not breathing perform mouth to mouth resuscitation
If the casualty requires an ambulance, the First Aid Officer should delegate someone to contact the emergency services by dialling 000 and asking for an ambulance.
You will need to give the following information:
• The name of the company
• Its full address including number, street, suburb and, if possible nearest cross street
• Location of emergency within the workplace
• Type of emergency
Responsibility
Notify your supervisor or if there are other people around, delegate someone who will contact the First Aid Officer.
Contacts are found in each office above the light switch or near the first aid kit – see attached.
The Duties of the First Aid Officer are:
• To ensure there is no danger, check for breathing and make sure the casualty is comfortable
• To call the ambulance or delegate someone to do so if required
• To ensure first-aid kits are replenished
• To complete a First Aid Injury Form
Recommendations
Supervisors should ensure that there is at least one first aid kit available in the workplace. The first-aid kit should be located 100 metres away from each other.
All staff should know where the kit is located.
There should be delegated First Aid Officers available throughout the workplace at all times.
Keep the First Aid Officer Contact List up to date and copied for each room in the workplace
Ensure that the First Aid Injury Form is written and kept stating the details of the casualty, the accident, the injury, the name of the First Aid Officer and treatment given. By filling out this form ensures that the first aid kit is replenished and to protect the First Aid Officer in case of complications which were not anticipated at the time of the accident.
